Social Support Groups - Just Friends & Becoming Friends

Social Support Groups - Just Friends & Becoming Friends

Just Friends & Becoming Friends are programs unique to NAMI Mercer. They were begun in 1990 by parents concerned about the loneliness experienced by their adult children affected by mental illness. The groups are predicated on the belief that good times, acceptance, camaraderie, and exploring the joy of living are foundational to better health and an overall better quality of life.

The names of these groups were selected by the participants, who range in age from their twenties to their seventies. The emphasis on friendship is intended to proclaim publicly, “We are just people like everyone else, looking to connect with others and celebrate good times.” Through the generosity of our donors, NAMI Mercer underwrites the costs associated with at least one of these social events for each group per month.

Just Friends & Becoming Friends Activities

Cumulatively, these groups boast over 100 members, but not everyone participates in every activity. Some activities attract a smaller group (10-20), while others, such as holiday parties, draw a larger crowd (40-50). Activities are selected by the group in concert with NAMI Mercer staff and include:

  • Bowling & Pizza
  • Walks/Hikes
  • Dinners at local restaurants
  • Hiking and canoeing
  • Game nights
  • Movies
  • Museum trips
  • Trenton Thunder baseball games
  • Holiday parties ...and more.

If you are interested in joining Just Friends or Becoming Friends, contact NAMI Mercer to attend the next “Meet and Greet” event. Participation in a "Meet and Greet" event, along with a current NAMI Mercer membership, is a prerequisite for joining our support groups.
