Hearing Voices Support Group

Do you hear voices or have any other unusual sensory perceptions related to your mental health challenges?

If you do, you are not alone. More than 25 percent of all persons with serious mental illness experience unusual perceptions. For some, the presence of these can be distracting. For many, they can be tormenting. Critical, harsh, and commanding voices, for example, can overwhelm a person to the point of despair, disrupting work efforts, home life, and personal peace. Finding a safe place where you can openly discuss your experiences and seek to understand and learn from them can make a positive difference.

A new approach to treatment

NAMI Mercer has modeled this group in part on a movement that began in Holland and has spread to the United Kingdom and the United States. Known as the “Hearing Voices Network (HVN),” this approach involves a focus on activities of self-help and respects  the integrity and dignity of all the individuals participating in the support groups. Led by trained facilitators, participants share what they do to negotiate and live with their symptoms in a way that supports their best possible quality of life. They gain a better understanding of the  phenomenon they experience and learn how to work with it in more productive ways.
