Young Scholars' Institute

Young Scholars' Institute (YSI) is a year-round non-profit, after-school learning center.

Tutoring (K-12)
Volunteer tutors from local colleges and the community provide weekly one-hour instruction in specific subjects. Tutoring is held Monday through Thursday from 3:30-6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. during the academic calendar year. Registration is required.

Summer Enrichment Programs (Grades 2-6)
Elementary and middle school students participate daily in morning academic classes and afternoon recreational activities for six (6) weeks. Academic classes include mathematics, science, and language arts. The program is held Monday through Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm during July and August. Registration and deposit are required.

Reading Adventures with the Deltas (Grades 2-5)
Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. provide reading enrichment and cultural activities on Saturday mornings during the school year. Registration is required.

College Tours (Grades 7-12)
YSI staff and parents chaperone bus trips for middle and high school students to visit colleges and universities in the fall and spring of each year. Dates vary. A limited number of scholarships are available based on documented need. Registration is required.

College Admissions Workshop (CAW) (Grades 8-12)
YSI staff facilitates an all-day workshop that provides information on college admission, financial aid, and career planning for students and parents. Workshops are held every spring. Registration is required.

SAT Preparation Program (Grades 10-12)
Skilled instructors provide math and verbal preparation for the SAT I. This course is offered once each semester in preparation for the December and June SAT. Registration is required.

College Student Mailing Twice a year
YSI expresses love, support, and concern for YSI students attending college. “Love packages” are mailed with many needed items and news from home. Families, friends, and corporations donate new items and fresh baked goods.

College Student Gathering In December and June
YSI hosts supportive and motivating networking activities for college students. Professionals discuss career planning, future opportunities, and goals. Refreshments included.

YSI Holiday Project
YSI provides holiday food baskets and gifts for families of YSI participants. Generous donors and volunteers coordinate a holiday gift basket and food giveaway to needy families.
